Washington, DC-based band Deleted Scenes recently released its debut album Birdseed Shirt to much critical praise. Notably, the album recently received an 8.0 rating from tastemaking culture website, Pitchfork Media. The band is currently walking through that opened door by shining a brighter light on its album – one that reveals a record with a style that has already been referred to to as “an acid-trip that is absolutely habit forming” (Madison Isthmus)…

I’m not sure how much anybody really cares about Pitchfork these days. Actually, does anybody even read Pitchfork? If you read Pitchfork, raise your digital hand.

Regardless, I like this song a lot. It’s got pretty sounds. And I’m feeling a little sad today. I spent yesterday evening and this morning listening to Cat Power, Elliott Smith and Chris Garneau, to give you an idea. If you’re feeling like me, this should compliment your case of the Mondays nicely.

Also, I would like to mention, I’ve never owned a fake ID. Phew. I'm really glad I got that off my chest.

American Analog Set//Punk as Fuck

It’s Expletive Week, motherfuckers!!!
What does that mean? That means a week of totally offensive songs.

This song is called Punk as Fuck but it sounds more like Sad Bastard as Fuck. Partially, my extreme affinity for it comes from it’s hilarious name. And that fact that I secretly envision myself to be Punk as Fuck, especially if being Punk as Fuck can sound like this.

I love this band. They are so pretty and depressing. I was always surprised that they didn’t blow up.

This song is another Ali mixtape find, as many of the best songs are.

Sufjan Stevens//Detroit, Romulus and Ypsi

So, here’s a 3-for-1 to wrap up to Michigan Week—and how appropriate that the final offerings are from Michigan native Sufjan Stevens’ 50 States project kickoff Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lakes State.

These three songs happen to be some of my favorite tracks on the album, in addition to accurately representing the stops on the trip that I’m about to go on. I’ll be flying into Detroit (although the airport is actually in Romulus) and then heading to Ypsi for the wedding pre-party. The wedding itself will be in Kalamazoo, but unfortunately, there isn’t actually a Sufjan song about Kalamazoo. Sorry, kids.

Ypsi is a weird and depressing place. It has a very phallic looking water tower and is home to the famed Ypsipanty.

Michigan Fun Fact #4: The People Mover is an ineffectual public transit system that was built by Detroit in 1987. It loops around the city of Detroit, stopping mostly at major casinos. Nobody that I know has ever actually used it. It was rededicated during a 20th anniversary ceremony last year. Recently imprisoned and obviously corrupt mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was there to kick it off.
